Ostomy Pouch Fitting
A properly fitted ostomy pouch is essential to minimize skin irritation and obtain optimum wear time. Select an
opening size (on pre-cut wafers) or cut the opening size (on cut to fit wafers) to comfortably fit as close as possible around
the stoma without actually touching it. Use a skin barrier or strips to cover any exposed skin.
The Ostomate's Diet
The following foods are gas producing and should be avoided. Beans, Broccoli, cabbage, carbonated beverages, cauliflower,
chewing gum, chili, cucumbers, dried beans, fruitcake, garlic, green peppers, instant cocoa mix, kale, milk, nuts, onions,
radishes, sauerkraut, sweet potatoes and turnips.
Yogurt can reduce and control gas in ostomates.
Odor a Problem?
The following foods are known to produce odor and should be eaten with caution by ostomates. fish, onions, peanut
butter, strong cheese, cabbage, eggs, garlic, baked beans, cod liver oil, asparagus, some multi vitamin preparations, some
spices and alcohol.
